This year, a band of brave, intrepid explorers followed the lead of an enigmatic crocodile, a grumpy quoll, and a nervous bilby on their maiden voyage into uncharted waters to experience new adventures and make exciting new discoveries…

Theme
Slated as Aurawra’s opening theme, Year One learnt heavily into exploration and a voyage into the unknown, focusing around an expedition into Antarctic waters under the gentle lights of the Aurora Australis in southern skies.
We based this year around the themes of ‘Arrival,’ ‘New Journeys,’ ‘Beginnings,’ ‘Going out on a new adventure,’ ‘Uncharted territories,’ and the concept of “it’s the Journey that matters, not the destination.”
The colour palette we leant on elicited the beauty of the Aurora Australis, after which our convention is named, as well as the visual inspiration of a journey into the Antarctic. The Aurora Australis colours were presented in saturated neon greens, purples, and blues, while ice was conveyed with whites and light, icy blues.
All of our visual content also used icy themes, and we lent into maps and content being displayed as sea charts. The centrepiece of the in-person theming for this year was a 6-metre long boat, named the ‘RSV Aurawra Australis’.
Stats
- Aurawra Year One: New Beginnings was hosted in 2022 on the 22nd-24th of July at Novotel Sydney Olympic Park.
- Our Guest of Honour was Mamath, an Aussie artist making cute and colourful art inspired by animals and mythology.
- We had 324 unique furry registrants.
- We managed to raise $6978.35 for our charity of choice, Twenty10.

To everyone who attended Aurawra Con this year, and to the Furry Community, Twenty10 wanted to send a big fuzzy heartfelt thank you for selecting us as your charity partner this year – and congratulate you all on the mammoth fundraising effort! We were all blown away by the result!
Seeing all the creativity in the room, and feeling such a strong sense of community – both LGBTIQA+ and Allies alongside – was so great to see at the Opening Ceremony. We were so happy to see the sun come out over the weekend.
Monies raised will go directly towards creating some much needed resources for young LGBTIQA+ people and those that work and support them. We are inundated for resources everyday, so this will be a huge help.

Our very first Guest of Honour, Mamath is an Aussie artist that makes cute and colourful art inspired by animals and mythology. Best known for Boxfox, the iconic fox-in-a-cube, as well as her Tiny Pantheon enamel pin line.
